County Mutual Announces Grant Recipients for Member Law Enforcement Departments

To continue support of member law enforcement agencies, the Wisconsin County Mutual Insurance Corporation (County Mutual) and Community Insurance Corporation have announced the winners of their 2020 Advanced Law Enforcement Training (A.L.E.R.T.) Challenge Grants.

The County Mutual’s 2020 A.L.E.R.T. Challenge Grant program was created in the wake of the cancellation of the October 2020 A.L.E.R.T. Law Enforcement Challenge due to the pandemic, with the allocated funds coming from prize money for the annual training event.

“While COVID-19 forced us to cancel our 2020 A.L.E.R.T. Law Enforcement Challenge, what hasn’t changed is the critical work of our member law enforcement departments,” said County Mutual Director of Client Services Josh Dirkse. “These individuals put their lives on the line daily and we are grateful to all they do to keep our communities safe and protected.  While we were not able to gather this year for our annual training event, the County Mutual A.L.E.R.T. Challenge Grant program will still make an impact for recipient departments.”

Usage for the funds includes training, equipment, technology and PPE (no firearms or non/less lethal alternatives such as tasers), community awareness campaigns, mental health and wellness, and other innovative programming.

Ten member departments were awarded the 2020 Challenge Grants, which total $27,000, and include:

  • Adams County Sheriff's Office: $ 3,200.00
  • City of St. Francis Police Department: $4,000.00
  • Dunn County Sheriff's Office: $2,965.00
  • Green Lake County Sheriff's Office: $1,764.84
  • Jackson County Sheriff's Office: $2,500.00

  • Portage County Sheriff's Office: $5,000.00
  • Village of Fox Crossing Police Department: $1,788.00
  • Winnebago County Sheriff's Office: $ 2,475.00

To be eligible, grant recipients had to hold an active County Mutual or Community Insurance Corporation General Liability insurance policy on November 1, 2020; meet the definition of a "law enforcement agency" as outlined in Wis. Stat. 165, and complete, sign, and submit the "2020 A.L.E.R.T. Challenge Grants Application."

Grants were awarded by the County Mutual's Loss Prevention/Workers' Compensation Advisory Committee on Thursday, December 3, 2020.
