Westby Area School District Holds School Active Shooter Training

County Mutual Member Counties Participated in Vital Safety Training

Community Insurance Corporation member Westby Area School District held a School Active Shooter Training Day June 7, 2017 at Westby Area High School. Vernon County, a Wisconsin County Mutual Insurance Corporation (County Mutual) member, ran the training.

“This collaborative event brought together sheriff’s departments, fire departments and emergency management to prepare for an issue that we hope never happens, but for which we must be prepared,” said County Mutual/Community Insurance Corporation Risk Management Consultant Jessica Schroeder, who served as a safety officer for the training day.   “Often, we see larger urban districts conducting this comprehensive training and more rural districts need to be as prepared.”

Other County Mutual members present included Vernon, Sauk and Iowa counties.

“There were many players that made this training day go off so well,” said Schroeder.  “Extra credit goes to Westby Area School District Buildings/Grounds Supervisor Norm Davis, Vernon County Sheriff John Spears, Vernon County Emergency Management Director Chad Buros and Vernon County Sheriff’s Department Lieutenant Jason Crume for their work.”

In addition, Jessica highlighted the work of Sauk County Emergency Management Director Jeff Jelinek, who served as a facilitator and Iowa County Emergency Management Director Keith Hurlbert, who acted as a safety officer.

Fire departments included Westby and Viroqua, and EMS present was Tri-State Ambulance, LaFarge, Westby and Viroqua.

Responding law enforcement included Vernon County, Hillsboro, Coon Valley, Ontario, Kickapoo Valley Reserve, LaFarge, Viroqua, Wisconsin State Patrol, Westby, West Salem, Lake Delton and Cashton.

West Salem School District also observed.

“We commend all those who participated in this critically important safety event,” said John A. Dirkse, executive vice president of Aegis Corporation, which administers the County Mutual and Community Insurance Corporation.  “Ultimately, our job is to keep our schools and students as safe as possible and the turnout for this active shooter training day shows the importance of this type of training.”
