Who We Are

The Wisconsin County Mutual Insurance Corporation was created in response to a crisis in the commercial insurance market. In 1985, many counties lost their liability insurance when several commercial carriers ceased writing municipal business. This forced counties to purchase insurance from a limited commercial market that increased the cost while reducing the level protection offered to counties.

As a result, Wisconsin counties joined together to research the feasibility of creating a county owned and operated mutual insurance corporation. In 1988, the County Mutual began operation with 24 owner counties.

Today, the County Mutual has 54 county owners.
